FictCo Design Portfolio

In most cases, FictCo also provided original illustrations and photographs for the websites we've designed, as well as some of the logos. Ask for details.

Zach Fisher Band
Band

Zach, sick of sending changes to someone who didn't get them done (not, we should mention, FictCo) wanted complete control of all his text, so we set up ZachFisherBand.com with a Movable Type blog with which he can edit his entire site. Design-wise, he was looking for something simple and attractive that reflected the feel of his music.

The Cronus Chronicles
Anne Ursu's children's book series

The map is the beginning of kids' exploration of the Cronus Chronicles site, where they can — along with Charlotte and Zee, the stars of the series — explore the realms of Greek Myth. The Oracle at Delphi answers questions about the past, present, and future, Charon the ferryman has all the dirt on the world of myth, and The Underworld is the realm of the first book, The Shadow Thieves. We also did all the illustrations for the website.

Laura Ruby
Author

We set up Laura Ruby's CSS-based web presence — which needed to be a versatile enough design to fit the style of her books for both children and adults — to be fully editable using Movable Type, putting the author in complete control of every piece of text on the site. We also drew that cat.

Huber Brewery
Wisconsin Brewers of Beer and Soda

The Huber Brewery wanted something that looked as good as their brews tasted, so we used the brews themselves to . FictCo also programmed the site, including the postcards, the front page "random brew," the online store, and (our own creation) the Beerfinder, which can pick the right Huber Brew for any taste.

Anne Ursu
Author

Anne Ursu, when we expanded her site for the release of her second book, had an image of an abandoned theater in her head. So we gave her that image. Each novel has a design related to the book: The first (Spilling Clarence) is designed around a map of the fictional town of Clarence, MN, and uses important locations from the novel to represent different parts of the web site. The second (The Disapparation of James) takes its style from old theatrical handbills. We are currently working on a site for her trilogy of children's books, the first of which will be released in 2006.

Rebecca Hart
Singer/Songwriter

Rebecca Hart wanted a site that would capture the feel of her "where RockFolk meets Jazz" music. She updates her calendar and news pages via Movable Type; CSS-based design.

Nasty Canasta
Burlesque Performer

The 2005 New York Burlesque Festival winner for "Hottest Freshman" wanted a site that was sexy, sultry, incorporated hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs, and skulls, and had an easy-to-read calendar and photoblog she could update using Movable Type. CSS.

Tiny Ninja Theater
A Toy Theater Company

Though the name of the company says "whimsical" the site needed to say "whimsical, yet professional." The company, which produces both classical and original works performed by inch-high plastic ninjas and other dime store thespians, wanted an exhaustive source of information about Tiny Ninja Theater (show descriptions, press and reviews, bios, and news), but also wanted the site to be a "Tiny Ninja Theater production" in and of itself. To that end, we developed a Flash game which lets viewers create their own Tiny Ninja scene.

Tiny Ninja Theater has been featured in The New York Times, Playbill Online, The Village Voice, Time Out New York, Stage Directions and American Theater.

Cottages & Gardens Publications
Regional Shelter Magazines

HC&G asked for a "simple, clean design" that echoed the look and feel of the print magazine. We delivered it. In three days. Then we created versions of the design for the next two regional shelter magazines they launched.

Wuthering High
New York Production, February 2005

The CSS-designed site for "Emily Bronte's classic novel adapted for the stage as an 80s teen movie" takes the visitor into the hallways of Wuthering High, where they can rifle through the lockers, and read the students' essays on "who they think they are."

Book of Ages
Gift Book Series

The marketing site for Book of Ages was based on our the first book's cover design, and incorporated a weblog, ecards, and satircal reader's guide. We also designed both books, and the cover of Book of Ages 30.

Man Of Infinite Desire
New York Productions, 2002-2004

Taking its cue from vintage theatrical handbills, the site for this "one woman adaptation of the Faust myth from the point of view of Mephistopheles using monologue, mask, puppetry and prestidigitation" centered around the poster for the show, which we also designed and illustrated.

TheaterSounds
Playreading Series

TheaterSounds performs a monthly reading of either a new or classic play in the Hudson Valley area of New York State. For the website, used both for marketing and to convey information, they asked for a design that was reminiscent of a formal invitation, integrating images which evoked the feeling of the Hudson Valley, and containing archives of the previous readings in the series. FictCo also designs all of TheaterSounds publicity, including the show images archived on the site.

Survivor Deadpool
A fantasy-game tournament for fans of CBS' Survivor

Rated "A-" by Entertainment Weekly, Deadpool launched in January 2001, and grew to over 3,500 registered by the time of the Survivor 2 finale in May 2001. The third season on the show brought almost twice that amount. The site needed to be quick-loading, with clear and easy navigation, integrated player stats, and a sidebar with a huge amount of links.

FictCo also designed the parody logos.

SiteSherpa
An Internet media company focused on creating web navigation tools and information

SiteSherpa wanted their new homepage to reflect the aesthetics of the previous homepage's design and color scheme while taking a more clean, elegant, uncluttered approach. The page needed to successfully integrate two disparate elements: a sizable description of the downloadable software, and editorial content including weblog postings and a weekly interview.

We also did a Flash demo of their software.

SiteSherpa was a late victim of the dot-com crash.

Hide/Seek/NYC
A web-based reality game.

Hide/Seek/NYC called for a design which screamed "high-tech tracking device," and presented a large amount of information (including maps, fugitive tracking, diaries, photos, and datafiles, hunter logs, sponsor information, navigation, and basic introductory text) in a way that was easy for the viewer to assimilate.

Hide/Seek/NYC has been featured on NPR's Marketplace, CBS television local news, and in The New York Daily News, Time Out New York, FoxNews.com, and Gannett newspapers across the country.

Kundalini Komedy
NYC Based Improv Group

Launched in conjunction with their most recent show, Kundalini Komedy Sells Out, this site design tied in with the look of the publicity materials (which we also created.) Simple yet elegant, the main purpose of the site is to give visitors -- both the public and the press -- more information about the show than they could get on the postcard. (Program cover pictured)

Virtual Ireland
An online community.

For the Virtual Ireland site, the editors wanted a design that was friendly and warm, giving users "the feeling of home." The site was broken into five main channels -- each needed to have a clear, distinct identity while at the same time fitting into a unified whole.

Virtual Ireland has been featured in The Irish Echo. The site's parent company was an early victim of the dot com crash. The Virtual Ireland name was recently bought by a different company.

Rabbit Creek Partners
Venture Capitalist

A simple, sparse, clean site and logo for a venture capital company that has since purchased a sign company.

Lawyers.com
The Online Home of Martindale-Hubble, a Lexis-Nexis Company

We created 24 of the 42 templates for the upgraded version of their Lawyers Home Page tool, which allows Law Firms to pick a design and enter content to create their own website. 12 of these were redesigns that had to be "exactly the same as, only better than," the previous versions of the designs, so that clients would be comfortable with the upgrade, while at the same time feel that they were getting a better value for their money. The other 12 were totally new designs; each needed to be unique, with a broad range of styles ranging from conservative to funky-yet-still-appealing to lawyers. All 24 designs had to conform to strict coding guidelines in order to work in the tool.
